Every Monday night, the Black Diamond Barony gathers in Madison Heights to train in fencing and archery. This local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) brings history to life through immersive medieval combat.
The SCA is a worldwide organization dedicated to recreating medieval skills, traditions, and camaraderie. The Kingdom of Atlantia, is one of many regional divisions.

“Pretty much for everything you can do in modern day, there is a medieval equivalent that somebody does,” said Baroness Agatha la Sommeliere
The group fosters an inclusive environment and members emphasize that no experience is necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
“It’s such a niche sport and interest that no one there is really going to judge you,” said Braelyn Blackstone, a University of Lynchburg student who practices archery.
New participants are encouraged to take their time learning techniques and traditions. Observing, asking questions, and embracing the process are key.
“Go in, talk to people, observe, learn as much as you can, but also go into it with the knowledge that you are not going to be good anytime soon,” advised Erik Rosine, another University of Lynchburg student who fences.
Seven Hills Fighter Practice welcomes visitors every Monday from 6-10 PM. More information is available at https://blackdiamond.atlantia.sca.org/.
